There's no better time of year to freshen up the bedroom than spring and this season we've set our sights on the trend for urban living. Although monochrome provides the basis for the look, shades of grey and subtle bursts of brighter yet easy-to-live with colours soften the effect, and are paired with organic, textural materials. Think weathered wood, soft-to-the-touch fabrics and utilitarian furniture and accessories.
This beautiful oak bed would grace any country home. The wood is distressed by hand then finished in cotton and linen upholstery, which also rolls sumptuously over the upper edges of the headboard and footboard. Etienne super kingsize sleigh bedstead, £1,499, John Lewis.
Be bold drench your room in indigo blue. A saturated scheme requires some pluck, but the effect is so dramatic, it's well worth taking the plunge. Choose a deep shade of dark blue for the walls, then paint the skirting boards to match and go for a carpet in the same shade for an inky scheme that's ultra-chic.
And if you're worried about your teenage son, you've got good reason younger single lads, aged between 18-25, are officially the grubbiest age group, with 55% claiming to wash their sheets once every three months or less. The survey, carried out by mattress company Ergoflex, revealed that coupled-up Britons change their sheets most frequently every two weeks while single women change theirs every 2.5 weeks.
For a boutique hotel look, choose a smart bedstead with sprung slats. Made from birch with a dark stain to enhance the grain, it has a panel of off-white velour on the headboard. Garrat double bedstead, col Dark Chestnut, £800, Laura Ashley.
Never underestimate the value of the space beneath your bed. Even if your room has ample cupboards, shoes and bags seem to gravitate to that forgotten area, so it makes sense to use it properly. Standard bedsteads can be teamed with sturdy under-bed baskets, or even large drawers on castors. Divan beds with drawers are extremely useful, but choose one with a plain fabric cover so you don't need to use a valance sheet and can reach the drawers easily.
